The Dutch housing market is facing a number of challenges, including a housing shortage that is expected to worsen in the future. In addition to this, the current homes in the country do not meet the sustainability requirements for the future, nor the needs of the growing elderly population. Building new homes also contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the construction sector. To address these issues, Atelier van Berlo, Stichting Ouderenhuisvesting Rotterdam, and Metabolic conducted a qualitative design research project called Ruimtegenoten. The project focused on redistributing available housing in the Netherlands, with a specific emphasis on the housing needs of people over 55 years old.
